Japanese Tea House
The Japanese teahouse, in Western terms, often refers to a small structure in the garden where one can retreat to enjoy a beverage and light snack while overlooking a small stream or pond.
Windows are designed to overlook specials scenes such as an arched bridge over a stream, a glimpse of a waterfall, a beautiful lantern glowing in the evening light.
Often located at the end of a partially hidden path, the Japanese teahouse is a place where you can rest and leave your troubles behind you.
Ancient Japanese Tea House:
This very old Japanese tea house is constructed of nothing but old-growth cryptomeria posts bound with rafia.
There are no nails, pegs, or glue holding this sacred structure together.
The windows are shuttered against the snow, and the hole in the peak of the thatched roof is protected only by its being located downwind of the prevailing air currents.
Cooking in the Tea House:
In the old Japanese tea house pictured above, noodles and pork are boiled to create a broth. Another black kettle, suspended over the fire, steams bamboo shoots and ginger root.
Boiling water is added to the warmed teapot to brew green tea for the guests.
The smoke from the fire curls slowly upward toward the small opening in the ceiling. It lingers a moment, giving the house a warm atmosphere with the mingling smells of hardwood, cooking, and exotic herbs & spices.
Even after a thousand years, the Japanese tea house is still relaxing, cozy and inviting to the soul.
