British Columbia (Vancouver area) Vancouver: Vandusen Botanical Gardens, 5251 Oat Street at 37 Avenue. Sino-Himalayan sub-garden, Korean Pavilion, bonsai display. Vancouver: UBC Campus, NW Marine Drive: Nitobe Memorial Garden. The first authentic Japanese garden built in Canada in 1960, restored in 1992. Enclosed, all classical features, tea house. Vancouver: UBC Campus, 6804 SWMarine Drive: UBC Botanical Gardens. Davic C. Lam Asian Garden, with an Asian-looking garden pavilion. Vancouver: Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden, 578 Carrall Street (Downtown, in Chinatown). The first full-scale classical Chinese garden outside mainland China (Competes with the Montreal and U.S. Gardens). 2/3 of the garden is open to the public by free admission, 1/3 (the more impressive portion) by admission. A sub-garden that is a western interpretation of a Japanese Garden. New Westminster: Friendship Garden, adjacent to City Hall on Royal Avenue. 2.5 acre Japanese-inspired garden. Richmond: Kuan Yin Buddhist Temple Garden, 9160 Steveston Highway, between No. 3 and 4 Roads. A one acre garden on the temple grounds with bonsai display. Richmond: Kuno Garden, entrance to Garry Point Park, Chatham and 7 Avenue. º acre Japanese garden. (Victoria/Vancouver Island) Victoria: Butchart Gardens. Japanese sub-garden is one of the many gardens here. While not in a traditional style, most Japanese garden elements are represented in this sloping, strolling garden dating from the early part of the century. The garden is lit for night viewing. Victoria: Government House, in the Rockland District. A small Asian-style sub-garden. Victoria: Located near Victoria's Gorge Waterway in Saanich. the Takata Gardens were opened in 1907 by a private individual. Recently restored, directions can be obtained by calling (250) 479-6162. Saanich: A Japanese sub-garden located at 505 Quayle Road. Sooke: Royal Road Arboretum, in the 2000 block of Sooke Road on the campus of Royal Roads University/Hatley Castle. A good Japanese sub-garden and lake. Nanaimo: Tamagawa Japanese Garden, located on the Malaspina University College Campus, 900-5th Street. A small garden in a heavily travelled area of the campus. |
BC Interior Hope: Friendship Garden, in Memorial Park at 3rd Avenue/Wallace Street. Created in memory of a Japanese internee's garden at Roseberry Camp at Ladner in WW II. Rosedale (Chilliwack): Minter Gardens, 52892 Bunker Road, Rosedale, Exit 135 off Hwy. 1. An extensive Penjing (Chinese bonsai) display in a Chinese-themed area ('garden'). Kelowna: Kasugai Japanese Garden, located behind Bennett Fountain on Queensway (just off Water Street) near the downtown, not far from the Railway Station. Complete with pond, waterfall, and stone garden covering three acres. Vernon: Polson Park, Highway 6 and Hwy. 97 South. Nakusp: Small Japanese garden located on hill overlooking Arrow Lake, adjacent to the beach/town park. Nakusp was also a host community for Japanese interred during the Second World War. Slocan: Located adjacent to Highway 6, NW of Nelson in the Kootenay Mountains. A small, somewhat authentic garden constructed by Japanese Internees housed in Slocan and other interior communities during the Second World War. Alberta Edmonton's Devonion Botanical Garden University of Alberta Alberta, Canada Lethbridge: Nikka Yuko Japanese Gardens: Located within Henderson (Lake) Park just East off the Start of Highway 4, there is an authentic garden, stone garden, and Cultural Centre representing the Tea Room and Japanese home styles. Lethbridge still has a Japanese community as remnants of Japanese internees brought from B.C. to work sugar beet farms in the area during the Second World War. Devon (SW of Edmonton): A six-acre, very authentic Japanese Garden forming part of the larger Devonian Botanical Gardens operated by the University of Alberta (Edmonton). All classical elements, and a cultural centre not open to the general public. Stony Plain: a vaguely Japanese-inspired friendship garden, located near the downtown on an East-West street. Manitoba Winnipeg: Zen-style rock garden between McPhillips Street and the Japanese Community Centre, symbolizing the endurance of the Japanese in Canada. Quebec The Botanical Gardens of Montreal in Maisonneuve Park contain over thirty gardens. An elaborate Chinese Garden with authentic shrines, penjing display, and gift shop is present.
